Our Work (DRAFT pending ST final copy)

Our Annual Review, and our Annual Report and Financial Statements provide a detailed overview of our work over the past year, and reports for previous years are also available. You can find these here.

We are the UK’s professional body and learned society for geoscience. As such we support and inform scientists and the general public. We do this by providing a wide range of services for geoscientists to make sure the public is supported by a professional and scientific community operating at a high level of competence and integrity. We also provide information directly to the general public and to policymakers, and we help inform and inspire the next generation of geoscientists by supporting education and outreach to young people.

Our purposes are set out in our Byelaws as follows:

"investigating the Mineral structure of the Earth".

This remit is discharged by:

  1. improving knowledge and understanding of the history, structure, constitution and dynamics of the Earth and its processes;

  2. promoting all forms of education, awareness and understanding of the Earth and their practical applications for the benefit of the public globally; and

  3. promoting professional excellence and ethical standards in the Earth Sciences for the public good.

It should be noted that the Society undertook a review of these Byelaws and our Royal Charter between 2022 and 2024, including an extensive consultation with Fellows and stakeholders. This has led to a draft revision of both of these governing documents, and if the revisions are approved by Fellows, the Privy Council and the King then there will be some small changes to the purposes set out above. These changes would probably take effect during late 2025 or 2026.
