“Roles and Responsibilities in Mining Governance” introduces participants to the complexities of mining projects through scenario-based decision-making, centred around a fictitious mining project. This participatory learning activity helps stakeholders explore challenges such as environmental impacts, governance frameworks, indigenous peoples' rights, and shared value creation. Participants are grouped into teams to address specific issues within scenarios, discuss responses, and develop actionable recommendations.
The activity structure includes:
- Introduction: Short video overview of the mining project
- Scenarios: Expert-led discussions across four focus areas
- Environment: Addressing impacts on reindeer populations
- Governance: Establishing structures for effective governance
- Indigenous People: Ensuring meaningful participation and voice
- Shared Value: Proposals for sustainable water quality solutions
- Consolidation: Participants share and refine recommendations collectively
- Analyse the multifaceted impacts of mining projects
- Explore governance models to mitigate social and environmental risks
- Understand the role of indigenous peoples and their cultural concerns
- Develop sustainable approaches to shared value creation
- Engage in participatory decision-making processes
- Formulate actionable recommendations for complex project scenarios
The course is ideal for professionals in the minerals and mining industry, policymakers, environmental advocates, community representatives, and students in related fields.
The activities have been designed to be relevant for all levels of experience.
It also appeals to those involved in parallel industries focusing on governance, sustainability, and social responsibility.
This course will be held virtually over two x two-hour sessions on the following dates, starting at 10:00 BST and ending at approximately 12:00 BST:

Mark Proctor
A founding Director of Sazani Associates, he is a natural resource conflict resolution specialist with a PhD on mining and conflict in South Eastern Europe. He has been working in the interface between communities, public and private sector, for more than 25 years across Africa and Europe and was actively involved in the Northern Irish peace process. A former UK Civil Servant, qualified UK Social Worker and Social Forester with an MSc in Planning. Mark specialises in both identifying the causes of and in managing natural resource based conflict. He has significant theoretical and practical expertise in engagement and community regeneration in urban and rural settings and in providing solutions to “Wicked Problems” and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
Cathryn MacCallum
Cathryn is a natural resource governance specialist, with more than 30 years international experience in social performance and rural development across Africa and Europe. As both author and reviewer of technical reports and plans for stakeholder engagement, livelihood restoration and indigenous peoples’ rights, she regularly applies her demonstrable abilities in critical application of international standards to due diligence reviews for mergers, acquisitions, finance and loans. She is a skilled trainer and post graduate lecturer in participatory approaches to social development, Global Learning, monitoring and evaluation planning and social risk governance. Cathryn, a Chartered Environmentalist and Scientist and Fellow of IOM3 was awarded for her work on gender equity and social inclusion in 2024.
