How to take your membership to the next level
Chartership and professional development
The Geological Society of London is the recognised UK professional body for geoscientists across all areas of expertise. It awards the professional title of Chartered Geologist (CGeol) and is licensed by the Science Council to award the title of Chartered Scientist (CSci). Both titles are of equal standing.
Accreditation as a Chartered Geologist or Chartered Scientist is a sign to clients, regulators, employers and the general public that you are a competent professional who can demonstrate a high level of knowledge, skills and experience. It signifies a public commitment to these professional standards.
The 'Chartered' designation indicates a professional practitioner who has been peer assessed as having key professional competencies and experience in their field of practice. Chartered Fellows are required to maintain their professional skills and knowledge through an appropriate programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and are bound by an enforceable Code of Conduct.
More information about Chartership, the Chartership process, how to apply and next steps can be found on the Chartership webpage.
Already Chartered and looking to take the next step in your career?
Become a Chartership Assessor
Extend your professional profile and career development, network with like-minded individuals and support the future of the geoscience community.
Assessors are a key part of the Chartership process as they review applications, hold interviews and recommend Fellows for Chartership.
Acting as an Assessor is a great way to demonstrate your seniority to your employer; showcasing your leadership and mentoring skills through your ability to assess candidates, facilitate effective professional discussions, provide constructive feedback and assist candidates with their applications.
Chartership AssessorsBecome a Chartership Supporter
All applicants for Chartered Geologist (CGeol) and Chartered Scientist (CSci) are required to have one professionally qualified Supporter who has current, first-hand knowledge of the professional standing and Chartership competencies of the candidate over the last three years.
The Supporter's guidance is crucial in ensuring the applicant's best chance of success with their application. Supporters are asked to complete an assessment report form in which they comment on the applicant's experience, knowledge and abilities against the seven CGeol, or five CSci, Chartership competency criteria.
Supporters and Mentors with CGeol and/or CSci are encouraged to apply to join the panel of Chartership Assessors if they have more than five years of post-Chartership experience, or have a considerable number of years pre-Chartership experience.
Chartership SupportersBecome a Chartership Mentor
Mentoring provides the opportunity to share knowledge and experience to help others develop and progress. It is a great way to enhance your training and career development, demonstrate your leadership skills and build your CPD portfolio.
Once you have become Chartered, simply join the LinkedIn Mentors group and the Early Career Network to seek out opportunities to Mentor others.
Becoming a Mentor, formally or informally, can be a great stepping stone towards becoming a Supporter or an Assessor.
