The Lyell Collection is an online collection comprising the Society’s journal, Special Publications and key book series - plus journals published on behalf of other societies.
The Lyell Collection stands as a testament to the ground-breaking work of Charles Lyell, a renowned 19th-century geologist who had a profound impact on the field. His seminal work "Principles of Geology" revolutionised geological thought, establishing the pivotal Principle of Uniformitarianism – the idea that the Earth's present is the key to the past.
Free Access to Charles Lyell's Legacy
In recognition of Lyell's immense contributions, all articles authored by Charles Lyell within the Lyell Collection are free to access. This invaluable resource provides unhindered access to the foundational works that shaped modern geology.
A Fusion of Historical Significance and Cutting-Edge Science
The Lyell Collection seamlessly integrates historical significance with modern cutting-edge scientific research. It houses a wealth of primary source materials, offering invaluable insights into the evolution of geological thought. This rich historical context is complemented by contemporary research articles, showcasing the ongoing advancements in the field and building upon the legacy of Lyell and his contemporaries.

Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology (QJEGH) is owned by the Geological Society of London and published by the Geological Society.
Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology (QJEGH) was established in 1967 to foster engineering geology research and practice. International in scope, its focus is on geology as applied to civil and environmental engineering and groundwater resource management. QJEGH publishes high-quality, authoritative, peer reviewed, international papers, addressing sustainability, climate change, energy transition, geohazards and geo-resilience, to inform academic and industry practitioners in engineering geology and hydrogeology.
The William Dearman Early Career Award is annually presented for the best QJEGH paper from an author in the early stages of their career.
Editor-in-Chief & Assistant Editors
The Editor-in-Chief, Prof Cherith Moses (Edge Hill University, UK) is supported by four Assistant Editors from the following sub disciplines: engineering geology, geomaterials, geotechnical, hydrogeology, along with an international editorial board
QJEGH Publishing HubGeochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis (GEEA) is a co-owned journal of the Geological Society and the Association of Applied Geochemists (AAG).
GEEA focusses on geochemistry in mineral exploration and resource development, the application of geochemistry to environmental issues related to mining and mineral processing, and the development of methods and techniques to geochemically analyze rocks, soils, sediments, waters, and vegetation.
Editor-in-Chief
Professor Matthew Leybourne, Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario.
GEEA Publishing HubEarth Science, Systems and Society (ES3) is a fully open access journal owned and published by the Geological Society.
Launched in 2021 the Journal previously utilised services provided by Frontiers Media.
ES3 is dedicated to the open access publication of timely and topical research of high importance across the breadth of the geosciences.
The journal has a special focus on cross-disciplinary research that showcases the relevance of geoscience to sustainability in society.
Editor-in-Chief

Geoenergy is a co-owned journal of the Geological Society and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), launched in January 2023.
Continuing the mission of its sister journal, Petroleum Geoscience, Geoenergy focuses on the publication of timely and topical research in subsurface geoscience, critical for this new era of sustainable energy.
Editor-in-Chief
Sebastian Geiger, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands
Geoenergy Publishing HubPetroleum Geoscience (PG) is a co-owned journal of the Geological Society and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE)
Petroleum Geoscience transcends disciplinary boundaries and publishes a balanced mix of articles that drives the science to enhance sustainable development covering all aspects of the petroleum system. The journal content reflects the international nature of the research.
PG’s sister journal, Geoenergy, welcomes submissions on subsurface geoscience and the emerging energy transition field.
Editor-in-Chief
Jonathan Redfern, University of Manchester, UK
PG Publishing HubThe Scottish Journal of Geology is the joint publication of the Geological Society of Glasgow and the Edinburgh Geological Society, which prior to 1965 published separate Transactions: from 1860 in the case of Glasgow and 1863 for Edinburgh.
Traditionally, the Journal has acted as the focus for papers on all aspects of Scottish geology and its contiguous areas, including the surrounding seas. The publication policy has always been outward looking, with the Editors encouraging review papers and papers on broader aspects of the earth sciences that cannot be discussed solely in terms of Scottish geology.
The diverse geology of Scotland continues to provide an important natural laboratory for the study of earth sciences; many seminal studies in geology have been carried out on Scottish rocks, and over the years the results of much of this work had been published in the Journal and its predecessors.
The Journal fully deserves its high reputation worldwide and intends to maintain its status in the front rank of publications in the Earth sciences.
Editor-in-Chief
Heather Stewart, Kelpie Geoscience Limited, Edinburgh, UK
Scottish Journal of Geology Publishing HubThe Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society (PYGS) has been published without a break since 1839. It is one of the leading journals of British geology publishing original research papers on all aspects of geology.
Traditionally the Proceedings concentrated on the geology of northern England and its neighbouring areas, however submission of papers on related topics of a more general interest is encouraged. All papers are subjected to the full scrutiny of two independent referees.
