The Geological Society is one of the largest publishers of Earth science books in the world, producing a wide range of peer-reviewed titles.
Most books are published within one of a number of key series – Special Publications, Engineering Geology Special Publications, Memoirs, or the “Geology of...” series. Others are published in conjunction with other international Earth science organisations such as IAVCEI and TMS. The Society also has an agreement with IUGS to publish books within GSL series.
Selected book series are available on the Lyell Collection by subscription or pay-per-view. Print volumes are available from the Online Bookshop (subject to availability).
Special Publications are renowned throughout the global geoscience community for their high quality of science and production. They represent a state-of-the-art treatment of their subject matter. Over 30 subject areas are covered in more than 550 volumes. Special Publications are edited volumes drawing on a range of expert authors and provide a balanced coverage of subject area. The Society has high standards of quality control for book proposals, and the volume editors undertake full peer review of all papers to the standards expected for our journals.
Special publications are available online on the Lyell Collection and also as printed volumes from the Geological Society online bookshop.
More information on Special PublicationsGeoHorizons is a new open science book series published jointly by the American Geophysical Union and the Geological Society. The series focus is on solution-based science that addresses the many challenges facing humanity and the environment, especially those related to climate change and sustainable development.
The series is committed to the principles of open science.

Geoscience in Practice is a series of books covering the use and application of geological techniques relevant to a subdiscipline. The series aims to present balanced, practical expertise and critical hands-on information from experienced contributors in a way that is clear, straightforward and relevant for a broad audience, including undergraduates, trainee geoscientists, professionals, practitioners, and others. Techniques covered may be field, laboratory, office-based or any combination. A theoretical knowledge in the subdiscipline will be assumed to allow the volumes to solely concentrate on how to apply the techniques in practice, with key text augmented by flow charts, top tips and worked examples from industry and academia. Books in the series will follow a specifically designed, accessible layout and include full colour illustrations.
These regional geology titles appeal to a broad audience, from amateurs and professionals visiting a region on their holidays, to researchers and engineers needing an overview of an area they are planning to work in.
The Petroleum Geology Conference series is a sequence of edited and peer-reviewed volumes arising from the prestigious London-hosted conferences. The series features papers, posters, animations and core photographs with commentary. The principal focus is on North-West Europe, but papers also detail many generic advances made in petroleum geology.
The Lyell Collection features the Proceedings from the 4th to 8th conferences and hardback volumes can also be purchased from the bookshop.
This series has been superseded by the Energy Geoscience Conference series also available in the Lyell Collection.
PGC volumes on the Lyell CollectionThese are commissioned by the Stratigraphy Commission and comprise mostly Correlation Charts for each Series within the UK. The Stratigraphy Commission are currently working on the Revised Correlations.
This series covers subjects of topical interest to a non-specialist audience.
This famous series, edited by Professors Deer, Howie and Zussman was acquired by the Geological Society in 1997. The 11 volume set is now complete.
The Society publishes books within occasional series, and also one-off titles. Brief details of recently active series are given below.
Professional Handbooks
These books offer guidance on practical aspects of the Earth Sciences and appeal to geoscientists working in both academia and industry. There are currently only two volumes in this series and we would be pleased to discuss ideas for further volumes.
Non-series titles
Our focus is in acquiring volumes for our main books series, but we will consider books that do not fit comfortably within one of those series.
