Earth Science Week 2025
Earth Science Week will take place from 12–18 October 2025 and will celebrate the theme 'Energy Resources for Our Future'.
Our energy future calls for navigating complex choices about how we power our homes, businesses and transportation. These decisions require a deep understanding of their environmental, social and economic impacts, and how they align with our personal and societal values. The year’s theme encourages us to become informed energy consumers and to actively work towards a sustainable future that ensures a high quality of life for generations to come.
Each October, The Geological Society coordinates Earth Science Week in the UK, in cooperation with the American Geosciences Institute and the wider international geoscience community.
Earth Science Week promotes responsible stewardship of the Earth through celebratory events and opportunities to discover the Earth Sciences, involving community groups, educators and citizens.

As a Society, we celebrate Earth Science Week by hosting a variety of outreach and public engagements events for all ages. In the past, this has been through film screenings, free Earth science family fun days, artistic competitions and science communication masterclasses.

Every year, we offer a number of small grants of up to £250 to assist with the running of events during Earth Science Week. Applications are welcome from organisations or individuals running events with a public engagement and outreach focus.

To celebrate our 14th year of involvement in Earth Science Week, in October 2024 we hosted, sponsored, and promoted over 60 in-person events throughout the UK. These events aimed to engage members of the public of different ages and backgrounds and spark a passion for geoscience.
The 2024 Earth Science Week theme was 'Earth Science Everywhere'. Each week saw something new, with activities developed to appeal to a range of interests and age levels. From Lord of the Rings and the geology of Middle Earth, Ice Age family days, a webinar, education resources and our biggest grant funding programme yet, it was an Earth Science Week to remember!
