Chartership criteria and competency requirements

The Chartership Regulations set out the competency criteria that you need to meet to achieve Chartership as well as detailing what you will need to provide and how the application and review process works.

These competency guidelines set out the standards and competency requirements required for Chartership

Intrinsic to the Chartership application and review process is the Society’s Code of Conduct.  Information is also provided about our approach to EDIA and confidentiality.

Master's level equivalence

If you do not hold a Master's level degree, you must submit a 'Master's Level Equivalence Report' (MLER).

What to include in your application

For Fellows going the standard route to Chartership, you will need to include a professional report detailing your professional development with focus on the relevant Chartership competency criteria being applied for.

Supporting documents are examples of your work that demonstrate how you meet the Chartership competencies.

All applicants planning to apply from 1 June 2026 onwards are required to declare any use of AI tools as part of their application using the form below.

20+ years' professional experience route

The Society recognises that Fellows with more than 20 years of professional experience may find it more difficult to produce detailed documentary evidence of their early professional work and obtain verification signatures.

That's why there is a '20+ years' route to Chartership with adjusted documentation to make it easier for you to complete your application.

Guidance for specific sectors

These guides provide information about how applicants working within these specialisms might look to provide evidence of their Chartership competencies in relation to the work typically undertaken within each sector.

Please note that these documents are due to be updated and added to during 2026.

Logging CPD (Continuing Professional Development)

You are now able to log your CPD online on the updated MyGSL. Whilst this experience is being improved, we have put together a template logbook which you can download and use to track your CPD.

A record of CPD activities for at least the last three years must be included with your application in the CPD section of the application.

You can find guidance about CPD, CPD logging, your CPD diary and more in the left hand column of MyGSL titled 'MyCPD".

Supporters statement

Your Supporter's statement will address each of the competency criteria, and you should ensure they have seen the entire application prior to submission. Visit our Chartership Supporters web page for further information.

Chartership resubmission

If your application was previously postponed, we request that complete the Assessor Feedback Response Summary Sheet. This document helps the Assessors understand how you addressed Assessor feedback from your previous application. It outlines the changes you have made to your application documents and to indicate that this has been completed in discussion with your Supporter and/or Mentor.

If your application was previously deferred, you may also find it useful to complete this form.
